This paper provides a report from the two Australian CCAMLR observers at the Third Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission meetings, Scientific Committee and Commission, that were held at Mahé, Seychelles from 7 to 12 December 1998.

This paper summarises activities undertaken by Australia to combat illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing in the Convention Area during the year to 30 June 1999.

The eighth year of surveys of beach man-made debris at Bird Island, South Georgia revealed a total of 430 items, 49 percent more than the total of 289 items in 1996/97. The ninth annual beach debris survey was carried out at Signy Island, South Orkney Islands during the 1998/99 austral summer.
