    Abstract

Conservation measures are an integral part of the Convention and are used for managing Antarctic marine living resources. Over the 17 years of their existence, conservation measures have grown in number and complexity, from two measures adopted at CCAMLR-III to 61 measures in force in 2000/01. The majority of the conservation measures adopted by the Commission deal with the management of fisheries, and most of these fishery measures are in force for a period of one year only. A review by the Secretariat (CCAMLR-XX/BG/4) identified 10 manage-ment elements common to fishery conservation measures. Based on this review, two alternative methods are proposed for simplifying the drafting of fishery conservation measures.
